Measurement of Femoral Anteversion using 3 Dimensional Imaging Technique

Abstract
Conventional methods that use cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) images to estimate femoral anteversion have several problems because of the complex 3 dimensional structure of the femur. There is the ambiguity of defining the femoral neck
axis and
condylar line and the dependence on patient positioning. Especially, the femoral neck axis that is known as a major source of error is hard to determine from a single or multiple 2-dimensional transverse CT image. In this paper, we are presenting
a
new
method that we have devised for the measurement of femoral anteversion by utilizing the 3 dimensional imaging technique. This method provides the most accurate and reliable measurement of femoral anteversion, because it is virtually equivalent to
the
direct measurement of bisected dried femur in vitro.
